Give Me Truth
The Sounds of Henry David Thoreau

In this 40-minute evocative program, percussionist Katalin La Favre plunges the audience into the world of Henry David Thoreau. A celebration of both Thoreau's philosophical views about life and the natural world, this performance connects excerpts from Walden with works of contemporary music. Descriptions of Walden Pond are echoed through the subtle marimba textures of Druckman's Reflections on the Nature of Water. We ponder Thoreau's comparison of human labor to machines through the metallic pulses of Lang's The Anvil Chorus. Other excepts from Walden are spoken with the accompaniment of leaves, stones, and pines cones imitating the sounds of the text, as if nature itself were reciting them. These sonic connections inspire a unique contemplation of Thoreau's words, leading the audience on a remarkable journey through the pages of Walden.
